Postgame Recap: Rangers 5 Caps 2

Madison Square Garden was yet again unkind to the Caps as defensive breakouts, and great goaltending by Henrik Lundqvist would prove to be too much. The Caps tried to rally but a bounce here and a bounce there did not do their way.

My Thoughts:

*The Caps defense was not very good last night as the Rangers scored most of their goals on either turnovers or odd man rushes. Correctable things but they did not do well last night,

*Braden Holtby didn't have one of his best games either as he did bit have good rebound control on the first goal and the goal by Jarret Stool in the third was a puck Holts has to have to keep the Caps in the game.

*Alex Ovechkin played very well, he was physical all night and scored his 6th goal of the season off a great play by Nate Schmidt.

*I thought it was the best game as a Cap for Justin Williams, it seemed like every time he was on the ice the Caps were able to cycle the puck and get chances. The problem was they were way too far behind to make a difference. Williams had an assist on Marcus Johansson's 3rd goal of the season late in the second period.

*The Caps need more from the bottom six, I though a couple shifts were good last night but guys like Brooks Laich and Tom Wilson in particular need to bring a little more offense. Chandler Stephenson showed some flashes last night so maybe that can be a start for the 4th line.

*Overall the Caps outshot the Rangers 34-21 and had more that 60 shot attempts. There were stretches of the game where you would think the Caps were in control. It all falls back on defensive break downs and turnovers. I do believe that effort was there, and that the mistakes are correctable. So, we throw this one out the door and focus on the next one.
