Caps vs. Ducks Postponed

The Caps and Ducks have indeed been postponed tonight due to the major snow storm hitting the DC area. The game will be rescheduled at a later date. Also I don't believe the Caps and Pens will play Sunday as the Metro is closed all weekend. To all of you in the DMV, get home safe!

Postgame Recap: Caps 6 Blue Jackets 3

The Caps return to Columbus was a successful one as behind 6 goals they were able again to keep their lead in the Metro Division to 18 points.

My Thoughts:

*Evgeny Kiznersov had 4 assists last night. Kuz has been a special player this year and he was just awesome once again last night.

*Nick Backstrom scored 2 goals as he was the shooter last night.

*Nice to see youngster Andre Burakovsky score on a beautiful shot that hit the top corner over Sergei Bobrovsky. That second line for the Caps was buzzing all night.

*Alex Ovechkin scored his 28th of the season after Marcus Johansson was high stocked and the Caps got a 4 minute power play on the double minor. OV was able to get the first one.

*Marcus Johansson and Jason Chimera were able to add goals as well. The third line has played very well since Johansson was put at center there.

*Overall the Caps won their second in a row and will attempt to start a new winning streak. Meanwhile they are just running away with the Eastern Conference.

Post Game Recap: Caps 5 Rangers 2

The Caps bounced back after a tough loss in Buffalo Saturday with a strong win against the Rangers on Sunday. The Caps are now up 18 points in the Metro Division.

My thoughts:

*Justin Williams had his 2nd hat trick in his career. Williams has been great for this team on and off the ice this season.

*Marcus Johansson scored on the power play off a great pass by Nick Backstrom. Marcus has been quietly having a good season this year.

*Braden Holtby left the game late in the second period as he was experiencing dehydration. Philipp Grubauer came in and took care of business from there.

*Evgeny Kuznetsov keeps humming along as he had a 3 assist night.

*Alex Ovechkin scored as well yesterday, OV has been great against the Rangers this season.

*Overall it was nice to see the Caps respond from a rare bad performance on Saturday. They have now beaten the Rangers the last 3 times they have met.

Pregame Notes: Washington Capitals at. Buffalo Sabres

The Caps are north to play the Buffalo Sabres one more time this season. They will see if they can push the winning streak up to 6. Here is the lineup based on the morning skate.

Forwards:

Ovechkin-Backstrom-Oshie
Burakovsky-Kuznetsov-Williams
Chimera-Johansson-Wilson
Sill-Richards-Latta

Defense and Goalies:

Alzner-Niskanen
Schmidt-Orlov
Chorney-Ness

Holtby
Grubauer

Other Notes:

*Mike Richards will make his Caps debut tonight on the 4th line. Richards signed a couple weeks ago and has been practicing with the team. This will give Barry Trotz a chance to see where Richards is when it comes to the shape he is in.

*With Richards in, Brooks Laich will be a healthy scratch. Laich has been nonexistent when it comes to offense this season and looks to have lost a step. Hopefully a game out will get him going as I expect him to be back in Sunday.

*Braden Holtby has been the best goalie in the NHL this year, and will be in tonight. I was thinking with back to back games that maybe Grubauer would get the start tonight with the Rangers in town tomorrow but based on the skate he's in. If there are any changes I will update on that.

*The Caps have been on a roll as we all know, to keep that going the key in my opinion is to score first. The Caps are dominant with a lead this season.

*Overall this is a chance to keep the ball rolling. I know they are playing well but it is important to just keep the good habits up. We will see if they can take down the Sabres and their young star Jack Eichel.

Postgame Recap: Caps 4 Canucks 1

The Caps ran into a hot goalie last night as Ryan Miller looked sharp in his return to the ice. However, the Caps were still able to score 3 times on him and add an empty net goal in the last second to beat the Canucks for the second time this season 4-1.  The Caps now have a 5 game winning streak headed into the weekend.

My Thoughts:

*Evgeny Kuznetsov was great last night with 2 goals and a beautiful assist to set up Tom Wilson in the second period. Last night was one of those games were the Canucks just could not stop Kuzzy all game, he was all over the ice.

*Dmitry Orlov played very well last night, as he has been getting points and playing solid defense. Last night he had a assist.

*Good to see Tom Wilson score again, I have seen him get better and better offensively as the season goes on. I am also starting to see him develop into a player who is physical but he is battling for the puck and playing smarter.

*Braden Holtby was great again last night making 29 saves on 30 shots. The only goal he gave up was on a Canucks 5 on 3 as Radim Vrbata scored on a couple of wacks at the puck. So, even on a 5 on 3 the Canucks had to work to score.

*Andre Burakovsky played on of his better games of the year as well as he was all over the ice. Burkie collected two assists and was out there throwing his body around as well.

*Karl Alzner scored his 3rd goal of the season after a puck battle that Justin Williams and Andre Burakovsky won and got the puck to Alzner who fired in the net past Miller.

*Overall the Caps keep humming along as they are now 33-7-3 with 69 points, just 43 games into the season. They now sit 16 points up on the Islanders for first place with a game in hand, and 18 up on the third place Rangers. The way the Caps are playing they may not need to worry about the division here in a month or so. We will see if they can continue to stay red hot.

Postgame Recap: Caps 7 Sens 1

Sunday night at the Verizon Center ended up becoming a very special night in the history of Caps hockey. As Alex Ovechkin would score his 500th goal, and added 501 in a 7-1 rout of the Ottawa Senators for their 4th win in a row.

My Thoughts:

*Justin Williams started the scoring with his 13th goal of the season off a great pass by Andre Burakovsky.

*T.J Oshie would get a power play goal to make it 2-0, off a tic tac toe play as he took a feed from Evegeny Kuznetsov.

*Zach Sill returned from suspension and paid dividends as he was able to score his 1st goal as a Cap.

*After that the flood gates opened as Dmitry Orlov shot a bullet into the top corner of the net to make it 4-1, and it was not even half way through the 2nd period.

*Then a special moment all Caps fan will remember for a long time as on a power play Jason Chimera fed Alex Ovechkin who shot the puck and beat Andrew Hammond for his 500th career goal. The Verizon Center erupted and all of OV's teammates jumped off the bench to celebrate with him. His mother and father in the stands watching, it would end up being a very special moment in Caps history. In the 3rd period OV would add number 501 on a beautiful play.

*Also in the third period Tom Wilson scored his 3rd goal of the season. Wilson has been played well offensively even though the goals haven't come yet. Hopefully that will change now.

*Nick Backstrom and Jason Chimera each had 3 assist nights, and Andre Burakovsky had 2 assists as well however he would leave the game after awkwardly falling into the boards.

*Overall the Caps continue to run away with the Metropolitan Division no matter what obstacles are in their way. Alex Ovechkin's 500th career goal is just another great moment in a season so far that has all the makings of being a very special one in Caps history. I think people will agree with me that there is something special about this years team.

Pregame Notes: Washington Capitals vs. Ottawa Senators

The Caps return home after going 3-1-1 on their 5 game road trip, and are coming home with a 3 game winning streak. Everyone will be watching to see if Alex Ovechkin will score his 500th career goal at home. It's a busy day in DC sports as the Redskins are playing a playoff game, and the best team in the NHL is home too. Here is what I think the lineup will look like with it being back to back.

Forwards:

Ovechkin-Backstrom-Oshie
Burakovsky-Kuznetsov-Williams
Chimera-Sill-Wilson
Laich-Latta-Galiev

Defense and Goalies:

Alzner-Niskanen
Schmidt-Orlov
Chorney-Ness

Grubauer
Holtby

Other Notes:

*I am assuming that Philipp Grubauer will be in tonight so that Holtby can have a few days of rest before they play on Thursday.

*Zach Sill's suspension is over so I expect him to come back into the lineup. Paul Carey played well yesterday but the Caps need a center in.

*I don't expect John Carlson to be back tonight, but from what I'm sensing he could be back this week at some point.

*Mike Richards is with the team but he has to practice and may even have to go to Hershey to play a couple games before he gets into a NHL game.

*The Caps top two lines have been really good all season despite losing a couple of guys, but I have happy with the guys who have stepped in. That is a great testament to the way the franchise is run now. They have been able to plug in guys and not miss a beat.

*The biggest thing to watch tonight is Alex Ovechkin, as he goes for 500 tonight. It would be a very special moment for a guy that has given us so many great moments the last 10 years. We will see if he can do it tonight, a night after he took down the Rangers in what was one of his best games of the season.

*Overall this is a chance to continue building a new winning streak and increase what is a big lead in the Metropolitan Division. We will see if they can keep it going tonight.

Postgame Recap: Caps 4 Rangers 3 OT

The Caps faced a little adversity on Saturday after losing Zach Sill and Marcus Johansson to suspensions, and a few injuries to key players as well. Not only that but they blew a 2 goal lead in the third period. However, they showed again they have the heart of a special team as they were able to tie it late, and win in overtime at Madison Square Garden. (No full Highlights)

My Thoughts:

*Alex Ovechkin scored two goals, including the game winner in overtime to make the countdown to 500 down to just 1. He scored number 498 in the first period off of a turnover. Also, he scored number 499 in overtime on a end to end shooting the puck through Ryan McDonough and Henrik Lundqvist to win the game.

*The Caps were able to go up 2-0 when Justin Williams scored on a breakaway. Also perhaps the biggest play of the game was late when Williams got the puck on net so Nick Backstrom could score on the rebound to send it to overtime.

*Speaking of Nick Backstrom his goal to tie it with 5 seconds left was just huge, he was in the right position at the right time.

*Nate Schmidt I thought made a difference yesterday, not only did he get two assists but he also saved the game before Ovechkin won the game. People that watch the Caps day in and day out see how well he has played this year.

*Braden Holtby played pretty well yesterday I just think the team stopped playing in the third when they were up by 2. Holts made some great saves.

*Overall this was a great game to watch as a fan, it made my heart beat fast at time but it was a thrilling win. I thought the guys played well just let up a bit but then they turned the switch on and dominated the game late in the third and won in overtime. In my opinion it is very important to the mentality of the team that they know they can beat the Rangers. They have now taken 2 of 3 at MSG and won't be back there till a potential playoff series. The Caps now have a 16 point lead over the Rangers and Islanders for 1st in the Metro.

Postgame Recap: Caps 4 Islanders 1

The Caps played their first game at the Barclays Center last night as they took on the rival Islanders, and played a strong 60 minutes and took it to the Islanders for a 4-1 win. Now they lead the Metro Division by 14 points over the 2nd place Islanders.

My Thoughts:

*Alex Ovechkin's count down to 500 in now down to 3, as he took a nice pass from Karl Alzner to score #497. OV continues to be playing his best hockey under Barry Trotz, as he is playing in a team structure and continues to be one of the best the NHL has ever seen.

*The Caps opened their scoring with a goal by Jason Chimera which was his 12th of the season. Anyone who follows the Caps knows that Chimmer is on fire this season.

*The Islanders were able to cut the lead to 2-1, but the turning point was after huge penalty kill Nick Backstrom feed Nate Schmidt for a rocket that beat Jaro Halak to give the Caps a 3-1 late in the 2nd period.

*The Caps would play a strong 3rd period and Nick Backstrom would score a empty net goal to put the Islanders away.

*I thought the Caps were strong on the fore check all night long, as Justin Williams seemed to be near the puck all the time. Also, Tom Wilson played well in putting some pressure on the Islander D. I like what I saw when it came to the team's intensity.

*Overall this team is getting to be scary good, some of that is because last night Braden Holtby was once again outstanding stopping 34 of 35 shots.

*The Caps will stay in the New York are to take on another rival in the Rangers on Saturday. However, looking at this game against the Islanders it was impressive. The Caps right now have a bit of an injury bug, however they continue to play strong and the lead in the division continues to rise.

Caps Add Richards, Lose Sill for 2, and 4 in All-Star Weekend

A lot has gone on in the Caps world today as they have signed Veteran center Mike Richards. Richards,30, hasn't played all season and has had off the ice issues. The deal is 1 year for 1 million.

Last season was a struggle for Richards as in 53 games with the Kings he scored 5 goals and 11 assists. Also he scored 3 goals and 11 assists in 16 games in the AHL. This a low risk, high reward move by the Caps. Without Jay Beagle for a while it helps them now, but if he can rekindle what he has been before he could be a huge addition come playoff time and give the Caps more center depth.

The Caps will lose Zach Sill for two Games as he was suspended for his hit from behind against Adam McQuaid of the Bruins last night. He did not receive a penalty but anyone who say the hit knew it was from behind.

Lastly some great news today as Nick Backstrom and Braden Holtby will join Barry Trotz and Alex Ovechkin in the 2016 NHL All-Star Game in Nashville on Jan. 31st. It is well deserved for both of them. It will be fun watching the All-Start weekend with all of them in this year.

Postgame Recap: Caps 3 Bruins 2

The Caps played a strong game at TD Garden last night as they were able to end their short losing streak and were able to take down the Bruins 3-2.

My Thoughts:

*Evgeny Kuznetsov showed again how special a player he is as he dominated the game all night. Kuzzy got a assist in the first period and then scored his 13th goal of the season in the second period on a power play.

*Andre Burakovsky should be getting his confidence back as he opened the scoring in the first period as he took a great pass from Kuznetsov and put it top shelf over Tuuka Rask.

*Marcus Johansson is fitting in at the third line center spot and last night was able to tuck a rebound past Rask in the third period to give the Caps a 3-1 lead. For MoJo it's his 10th goal of the season.

*Aaron Ness played well for the Caps last night as he looked more comfortable, he got his first point as a Cap as he assisted on the Burakovsky goal.

*Braden Holtby was terrific last night as I thought the two goals he gave up were not his fault. They were on plays that are tough for goalies to stop. I thought he didn't have his best game in Columbus but he was back on track last night.

*Overall it was a well played game by the Caps as they were skating well and they were passing the puck all over the Bruins. After losing a couple it was nice to see them play a strong game. Especially with the injury bug they have had lately. It was a great road win.

Pregame Notes: Washington Capitals at. Boston Bruins

The Caps will look to end their 2 game losing streak tonight as they are in Boston to take on he Bruins. Here is the lineup based on the morning.

Forwards:

Ovechkin-Backstrom-Oshie
Burakovsky-Kuznetsov-Williams
Chimera-Johansson-Wilson
Laich-Sill-Galiev

Defense and Goalies:

Alzner-Niskanen
Schmidt-Orlov
Chroney-Ness

Holtby
Grubauer

Other Notes:

*Tom Wilson is starting to find his offensive game as he is getting assist after assist lately. Hopefully he can continue to develop because he can add a new element to that line.

*Stan Galiev will make his return to the lineup tonight as he will be on the 4th line. Michael Latta will be the scratch tonight.

*Aaron Ness looked pretty good in Columbus on Saturday, he can be a offensive weapon if he jumps into the play like he did the other night.

*Alex Ovechkin is only 4 goals away from his milestone of 500 for his career, will he do it this week? It is possible so we will have to see how he does tonight.

*Braden Holtby had an off game on Saturday, as he let goals in that he normally stops, we will see if he can get back on track tonight.

*The Caps have hit a injury bug but didn't play a bad game on Saturday it just was kind of luck for the Blue Jackets. Hopefully the boys will have some jump since they had a couple days off leading into this game. We will see but it should be fun as the TD Garden is a great place for hockey.

Pregame Notes: Washington Capitals at. Columbus Blue Jackets

The Caps look to bounce back tonight in Columbus as they take on John Torterella's Blue Jackets. The Caps 9 game winning streak ended on Thursday in Carolina. Here is the lineup for tonight's game.

Forwards:

Ovechkin-Backstrom-Oshie
Burakovsky-Kuznetsov-Williams
Chimera-Johansson-Wilson
Laich-Latta-Sill

Defense and Goalies:

Alzner-Niskanen
Schmidt-Orlov
Chorney-Ness

Holtby
Grubauer

Other Notes:

*Aaron Ness will make his Caps debut tonight as John Carlson remains out with a injury. Ness will play on the third defense pairing with Taylor Chroney.

*Jay Beagle had successful surgery on his wrist today and it is looking like a 6 week time frame for him to be back at practice then hopefully soon after he will be back in the lineup.

*With Beagle out Barry Trotz is going to try Marcus Johansson at the third line center spot tonight with Jason Chimera and Tom Wilson.

*Zach Sill will remain in the lineup as he will move to wing with Latta and Laich. I think Sill has shown some spark in his couple games so far with the big club. Hopefully he will bring some toughness to the 4th line.

*Ander Burakovsky will now find himself on the 2nd line, this could be good for Burkie's confidence as he was able to score against the Sabres on Wednesday.

*Overall I think this is a big game tonight. The injury bug is hitting the Caps so far in 2016, hopefully with Braden Holtby back in the net the Caps can get back on track tonight.

Postgame Recap: Hurricanes 4 Caps 2

The Caps winning streak came to an end last night with a 4-2 loss to the Hurricanes. The Caps fell behind and tried to mount a comeback but it was not meant to be.

My Thoughts:

*Nick Backstrom was banged up in the win against Buffalo but played and scored a goal in the second period.

*The countdown to 500 is down to 4 after Alex Ovechkin scored number 496 last night. OV tried his best to help the Caps comeback but again it was too little to late.

*I am feeling a bit under the weather so I will leave the game at that.
