Pregame Notes: Washington Capitals at. Florida Panthers

The Caps are in Florida for a Halloween showdown with the Panthers. For the second time this season the Caps are playing on back to back nights. No morning skate so here is my projected lineup for tonight.

Forwards:

Ovechkin-Kuznetsov-Oshie
Johansson-Backstrom-Williams
Chimera-Beagle-Wilson
Burakovsky-Laich-Latta

Defense and Goalies:

Orpik-Carlson
Alzner-Niskanen
Orlov-Schmidt

Grubauer
Holtby

Other Notes:

*Philipp Grubauer will start his second game of the season tonight with it being back to back nights. It will be a good chance for him to rebound from giving up 4 goals against the Oilers.

*The Panthers are playing back to back nights tonight as well so it is unclear if Roberto Luongo will play tonight or if they will go with Al Montoya.

*I believe Trotz won't change a lot from last night, if he does make changes you might see Taylor Chorney or Chandler Stephenson. Other than that I expect the lineup to be the same.

*Last night was a tough game offensively, tonight it will be important to give Grubauer some goal support tonight to take a little pressure off of him.

*The top line continues to be good but the second line is starting to find its way with Johansson, Backstrom, and Williams.

*Overall the Caps need to atlas get a point tonight, it is important to have a good start. With playing last night it will be difficult if they fall behind to come back.

Postgame Recap: Caps 2 Blue Jackets 1

The Caps got back into the win column last night in front of the home fans. The Caps improve to 7-2-0 in the first 9 games of the season.

My Thoughts:

*Justin Williams was really good last night, he had a few good chances and was rewarded with a goal. Williams looks like he is getting more and more comfortable with his new teammates.

*T.J Oshie had a good game as well finishing a tic tac toe play that put the game away in the third period. He should have had two but Sergei Bobrovsky robbed him late in the first period on the power play.

*Alex Ovechkin continued his strong play with an assist on the Oshie goal.

*Nick Backstrom who is a assist machine also had another last night.

*Braden Holtby was great last night, stopping 29 of 30 shots. I like how he played because early the Caps were playing a lot in their own zone and Holtby was swallowing pucks when the Blue Jackets got shots through.

*Overall it was a tough low scoring game that the Caps were able to get two points against a Division opponent. You take everyone you get because they will make a difference come April.

*Nate Schmidt was back in the lineup and I saw some good things but I think he needs to play more to get better. We will see if he gets back in tonight or if Chorney returns.

*Michael Latta returned as well and played better, again he needs more games to get going.

Pregame Notes: Washington Capitals vs. Columbus Blue Jackets

The Caps look to rebound tonight after a tough loss to the hand of the Penguins on Wednesday. Coming into town is old friend and new Blue Jackets bench boss John Tortorella. The Blue Jackets lost     their first 9 games but have won two since Torts has taken over. Here is the lineup for tonights game.

Forwards:

Ovechkin-Kuznetsov-Oshie
Johansson-Backstrom-Williams
Chimera-Beagle-Wilson
Burakovsky-Laich-Latta

Defense and Goalies:

Orpik-Carlson
Alzner-Niskanen
Schmidt-Orlov

Holtby
Grubauer

Other Notes:

*Michael Latta has been a healthy scratch since the Sharks game, he will return to the lineup tonight and Chandler Stephenson will take a seat.

*Also returning to the lineup will be Nate Schmidt, he will be taking Taylor Chorney's spot on the third defense pairing.

*Braden Holtby will indeed be in tonight, so don't be surprised if you see Philipp Grubauer gets the game tomorrow.

*The Caps had some good chances on Wednesday but the passing was a bit off. Tonight I believe the Caps will be back in the groove. They had a few days off leading into the Pens game.

*The Caps also need to simplify their game a bit and shoot the puck with guys in front of the net like they did during the five game winning streak.

*The Jackets still have some good players on their team, so the Caps have to come out hard. The Caps and Jackets played some emotional games last season and with John Tortorella I expect a hard nosed game from Columbus tonight.

*Overall the Caps are ok after losing the other night, but they need to get back on track tonight because the other teams in the Metro Division are playing well. If the Caps come out and have more tape to tape passes and traffic in front of the net then they should have success tonight.

Postgame Recap: Caps 7 Oilers 4

The Caps finished their first road trip of the 2015-2016 season with a 7-4 win in Edmonton to finish the trip 3-0-0. Evgeny Kuznetsov put on a show with a five point night as the Caps improve to 6-1-0 on the season and sit a top the Metropolitiain Division.

My Thoughts:

*Evgeny Kuznetsov got his first career hat trick last night, and added two assists. Kuzzy has been on fire lately and his emregence as a young start can take this team to new levels if this continues. His chemistry with Alex Ovechkin and T.J Oshie has been a catalyst to the hot start.

*Nick Backtrom has a goal and assist and continues to put up points as well. I am very happy with how he has come in and has not missed a beat.

*John Carlson again is having himself a great start with a three assist night, he is now up to 8 assists in just 7 games. Also, he has been great on the power play.

*Justin Williams scored his first goal as a Cap last night. Williams has played well but was finally rewarded for his efforts with a beautiful deflection.

*Marcus Johansson added another goal, Andre Burakovsky added a goal and assist as well.

*More on the top line as T.J Oshie and Alex Ovechkin both recorded two assist of their own last night. I have nothing else to say, they are just playing out of their mind right now.

*Philipp Grubbier played his first game of the season last night and look rusty as he stopped 19 of 23 shots, however he didn't give up anything in the 3rd. It is hard to sit for a couple weeks before seeing game action. I'm sure he will get better as the season moves on.

*Overall it was a great road trip for the Caps who are now on a roll. They are fully healthy at the moment and are playing well. We will see if they can continue the winning streak as they come back to the D.C.

Forwards:

Ovechkin-Kuznetsov-Oshie

Defense and Goalies:

Orpik-Carlson
Alzner-Niskanen
Schmidt-Orlov

Postgame Recap: Caps 3 Canucks 2

Well a strong third period comeback for the Caps lead to their first win in Vancouver since 2001. Thanks to some solid goaltending by Braden Holtby, and the captain Alex Ovechkin. The Caps are now 5-1-0 to start the season.  Here are the Highlights:

My Thoughts:

*Jay Beagle who normally makes a difference defensively pitched in offensively with a goal and assist. Beagle seems to be fitting right in a third line center.

*Jason Chimera kicked off the scoring with his 3rd goal of the season, he took a feed from Beagle and beat Ryan Miller.

*John Carlson got another assist making it 5 so far this season. Right now the way Carlson is playing he could be in for his best season yet statistically.

*Alex Ovechkin is up to 5 goals now with his winner at the 15:05 mark of the 3rd period to give the Caps a lead that they would hang on to.

*Evgeny Kuznetsov made a difference again tonight. The winning goal Kuzzy took a long outlet pass from Dmitry Orlov and on a two on one put a pass right on OV's tape that he would do the rest.

*Braden Holtby was solid again and made some big saves when the Caps needed it the most when trailing 2-1 in the second period. On the night Holts stopped 23 of 25 shots.

*Overall this was a special win for the boys as it's their first win in Vancouver in 14 years. Also, for the first time this season the Caps had a one goal game and they finished it off. As well as coming back even though they were trailing going into the third period. Good solid effort and another two points in the standings.

Pregame Notes: Washington Capitals at. Vancouver Canucks

The Caps are in Vancouver, British Columbia to take on the Canucks in the second of three Western Canada showdowns. The Caps kicked off the road trip right with their 6-2 win in Calgary, we will see if they can continue that tonight. Here is the lineup.

Forwards:

Ovechkin-Kuznetsov-Oshie
Johansson-Backstrom-Williams
Chimera-Beagle-Wilson
Laich-Stephenson-Burakovsky

Defense and Goalies:

Orpik-Carlson
Alzner-Niskanen
Schmidt-Orlov

Other Notes:

*I appears that Nate Schmidt will return to the lineup after being a heathy scratch for the last three games. It will be important for him to bounce back after a tough start in the first two games.

*Braden Holtby will be in once again tonight, but expect Phillipp Grubauer to start in Edmonton on Friday.

*Andre Burakovsky may be playing on the 4th line but I think he is playing well. He scored the other night after a great pass from Evgeny Kuznetsov.

*Marcus Johansson may not be lighting up the scoreboard but he has been screening the goalies that have lead to goals.

*The top line has been a difference maker so far this season and I don't expect anything different. I am very impressed with the development of Evgeny Kuznetsov, he has been playing with confidence and has been making the players around him better.

*Overall I expect this to be a good challenge for the Caps tonight, the Canucks are a talented team that is playing decent hockey so the Caps will need to keep to the plan and play the way they have been playing and it should be a good one.

Postgame Recap: Caps 6 Flames 2 UPDATED with HIGHLIGHTS

The Caps got off to a bit of a slow start on Tuesday when Sean Monahan scored for the Flames to open the scoring. However, the Caps dominated from their and won in decisive fashion to improve to 4-1-0 on the early season with a 6-2 win.

My Thoughts:

*The top line again was just oustanding. T.J Oshie had another goal on top of get plenty of chances around the goal crease. Evgeny Kuznetsov made highlight reel pass on Andre Burakovsky's goal and finished the night with three assists. Lastly, the captain Alex Ovechkin had a goal and assist and was able to record point number 900 of his career.

*Nick Backstrom once again showed that he was ready to go this season with two goals. Again the fact that I thought he would need a couple games to get going seems ridiculous now.

*Andre Burakovsky scored his first of the season in the first period as he was a recipient of a great effort and dazzling pass by Kuznetsov in the first.

*Justin Williams has played well despite not scoring a whole lot in the first five games of the season. However, he would assist on both goals by Nick Backstrom and had a good all around night.

*Jason Chimera scored his second goal of the season after a great play by Jay Beagle to spring Chimera on a 2 on 1, Chimera buried the puck top shelf. That line has played very well on both ends of the ice and it is nice to see them get rewarded.

*Brade Holtby stopped 17 of 19 shots last night for a .895 save percentage. That's not a real busy night for Holtby but I will take the fact that the Caps outshot the Flames 30-19.

*Overall the Flames have gotten off to a slow start this season and I considered this a game the Caps needed to win to hit a team while they are down and leave no doubt. Even though the start was a little slow they dominated the Flames and got two points to start this weeks road trip.

Pregame Notes: Washington Capitals at. Calgary Flames

The Caps are in Western Canada to begin their first road trip of the 2015-2016 season. It all starts with the Calgary Flames. The Flames were a surprise in the playoffs last year but are 1-4-0 to start the season. Here is the lineup for the Caps tonight.

Forwards:

Ovechkin-Kuznetsov-Oshie
Johansson-Backstrom-Williams
Chimera-Beagle-Wilson
Laich-Stephenson-Burakovsky

Defense and Goalies:

Orpik-Carlson
Alzner-Niskanen
Chorney-Orlov

Holtby
Grubauer

Other Notes:

*Braden Holtby will start the road trip tonight. However, it does seem to me that this week we will see backup Phillipp Grubauer get a start.

*Nick Backstrom looked very good in his first game back from injury on Saturday, we will see if he can continue that tonight or if he was running on excitement.

*Barry Trotz has liked the play of the third line of Jay Beagle,Jason Chimera, and Tom Wilson. So, much so that when Nick Backstrom came back Andre Burakovsky dropped down to the fourth line.

*Taylor Chorney has done well enough to stay in the lineup, he has been solid. I still would like to see the third defense pair play a little better than what they did in the first four games. However, I do see a steady rise in their play with each game.

*Michael Latta appears to be a healthy scratch again tonight. Next time he gets in the lineup it will be very important for him to make a difference.

*I would also like to see more from Brooks Laich, he has always been solid in the defensive zone but his offense has been suffering lately. I'm not sure if it's how he is playing or how Barry Trotz wants him to play.

*I really like how Marcus Johansson has played recently, he is playing with speed and has done well in puck battle the last couple of games.

*Overall I think it is important to hit the Flames while they are down. With Johnny Gaudreau and a number of good young forwards, and veteran Kari Ramo in net they have a good team. However, the Caps need to be aggressive and play a solid game tonight.

Postgame Recap: Caps 4 Hurricanes 1

The Caps played another good game last night after a slow first few minutes they put the pressure on the  Hurricanes. Even though Cam Ward was great in net for the Canes the Caps would be too much. With the win the Caps finish the opening home stand with three wins in four games.

My Thoughts:

*T.J Oshie is fitting in just nicely with this team. Oshie would lead the game off with a powerplay goal and then later get an assist on the Carlson powerplay goal in the third.

*Nick Backstrom didn't have much rust last night as he was able to score a goal and add two assists. So, even though he missed the entire preseason and first three games he looks like he is already in midseason form. Great to have him back.

*First line again was great, I mentioned Oshie getting a goal and assist. Well, Evgeny Kuznetsov may have not scored a goal or an assist but it was his puck pressure that lead to Alex Oveckin scoring late to put the game away.

*The Caps defense corp continues to pitch in on the offense as John Carlson scored for the second game in a row.

*Braden Holtby was strong once again in net and looks like he is in his rhythm. Scary moment in the game when he lost his helmet and was down on the ice. Hurricane defensemen Justin Faulk did not here the whistle and shot the puck and just missed hitting Holtby. Holts would not let that change his focus and finish the game strong.

*Justin Williams has not scored yet but I feel that with each game he is getting chances and with Nick Backstrom back in the fold I think you will see him score some.

*Chandler Stephenson was back in the lineup and I thought he looked good. He is getting 4th line minutes but he is a good skater. I am eager to see him get some more games.

*The Hershey Bears fell to the Portland Pirates 3-2, the Bears fell to 1-1-0 on the season. They got goals from Dustin Gazley, and Jakub Vrana. The Bears and Pirates will play again today at 3:00 p.m in Portland.

Pregame Notes: Washington Capitals vs. Carolina Hurricanes

The Caps are home for the 4th and final game of the opening home stand. The Caps are looking to end it 3-1-0 with a win tonight against Metro Division rival Carolina. The Hurricanes earned their first win of the 2015-2016 season last night in Detroit, beating the the Red Wings 5-3. The Caps are gettting reinforcements tonight. Nick Backstrom will make his 2015-2016 debut. Here is tonight's lineup.

Forwards:

Ovechkin-Kuznetsov-Oshie
Johansson-Backstrom-Williams
Chimera-Beagle-Wilson
Laich-Stephenson-Burakovsky

Defense and Goalies:

Orpik-Carlson
Alzner-Niskanen
Chorney-Orlov

Holtby
Grubauer

Other Notes:

*As I mentioned before Nick Backstrom is back tonight, he will center the second line because the first line is really building some great chemistry and has been on fire. I expect Backs to be good, but might have to shake off some rust.

*Taylor Chorney will stay in the lineup tonight after making his debut against the Blackhawks on Thursday. He will once again be with Dmitry Orlov.

*Andre Burakovsky will be going from the second line center to 4th line wing. Not that he is playing poorly but I believe the 3rd line is a checking line Trotz likes to stay intact.

*Chandler Stephenson will again center the 4th line, he looked a little nervous at the beginning of the game on Thursday but looked to settle in. Michael Latta once again will be a healthy scratch.

*I like the way Tom Wilson is playing so far this season. I like that he is remaining physical but doesn't have to drop the gloves every time he makes a hit. I think as the season goes on he will get even more production.

*Braden Holtby was great in net Thursday and will assume the position in between the pipes tonight.

*The top line was very good on Thursday again Chicago, especially Evgeny Kuznetsov who looks like he is ready to breakout. I think right now you have to keep those three together because they are passing the puck well and producing.

*Overall the Caps played their best game of the early season on Thursday and have the Canes coming into town having played last night. The Caps need to get their skating legs underneath them again tonight, if they do that then hopefully that can end this opening home stand with three wins.

*Just another note the Hershey Bears are in Portland to play the Pirates tonight and tomorrow and I will report those games as well.

Postgame Recap: Caps 4 Blackhawks 1

The Caps and Head Coach Barry Trotz were not happy about the way they played the first two games of the season. However, after a wake up call on Tuesday the Caps looked like the team we expected on Thursday as they put a solid effort in and we able to beat the defending champon Blackhawks 4-1.

My Thoughts:

*The team had their skating legs and that made a huge difference in the result of the game. Even when the Blackhawks came hard the defense supported one another and the forwards put more pressure on the Blackhawks then they did in the previous two games.

*Braden Holtby was outstanding, stopping 26 of 27 shots. In the second period the Blackhawks came at the Caps hard but Holtby was able to make the big saves when the team needed it.

*The top line had a great night as T.J Oshie had a goal and an assist, Alex Ovechkin scored a goal, and Evgeny Kuznetsov had two assists. That was just the scoring the line was good all night.

*John Carlson scored his first goal of the season on a laser from the point that beat Scott Darling that made it 2-0 for the Caps at the time. Youngster Stan Galiev picked up his first NHL assist on the goal, along with Marcus Johansson helping on the goal as well.

*Matt Niskanen also scored on a bullet in the third period, again another assist for Johansson and also helped by Andre Burakovsky. So, it was a good night for the Caps defensemen when it came to offense.

*Chandler Stephenson made his NHL debut and looked a little nervous at times, but he showed a couple of flashes that make him a good prospect. We will see if he gets the chance to play another game or two.

*Taylor Chorney looked a little rusty at times last night in his first game as a Cap as well. I think the only thing that need work right now on the team is the way the third defense pair has played in the first three games. However, it's early and Dmitry Orlov still needs more games.

*Overall this game reminded me of the games this team played well in last year. Good zone time in the opponents end, solid support defensively, and rock solid goaltending. All those have been the key to success for the Caps under Barry Trotz. Last night's game was a great rebound game for the boys.

Pregame Notes: Washington Capitals vs. Chicago Blackhawks

The Caps are back home for game 3 of a 4 game home stand tonight against the defending Stanley Cup Champion Blackhawks. The Hawks were shut out by the Flyers last night, while the Caps took one on the chin on Tuesday against San Jose. Here is tonight's lineup.

Forwards:

Ovechkin-Kuznetsov-Oshie
Johansson-Burakovsky-Williams
Chimera-Beagle-Wilson
Laich-Stephenson-Galiev

Defense and Goalies:

Orpik-Carlson
Alzner-Niskanen
Chorney-Orlov

Holtby
Grubauer

Other notes:

*Alex Ovechkin is back in the lineup tonight after missing Tuesday's game because he misses the morning skate. The Caps need him so it's good he's back.

*Chandler Stephenson will make his NHL debut tonight as he was called up from Hershey today. Michael Latta will sit out because Barry Trotz said he wants more from him.

*Taylor Chorney will make his Caps debut too tonight as he will take Nate Schmidts spot in the lineup.

*Braden Holtby will be in net yet again tonight as he has started the first couple of games this season. It comes as no surprise. It appears the Blackhawks will send Scott Darling into the net tonight.

*With Alex Ovechkin back Andre Burakovsky will move back to center and Brooks Laich will drop down to wing on the 4th line.

*Stan Galiev will get another chance to show what he can do tonight. As he will be on that 4th line with Laich and Stephenson.

*Overall the Caps need to bounce back after that loss the other night. It will be tough as the Blackhawks play a gritty hard nosed style and are well coached.

*Good news is that Nick Backstrom might be able to play as soon as Saturday. He has need a full go at practice and is looking better.

*Winger Sean Collins was sent back down to the Hershey Bears as he cleared waivers today.

*This will be a good early season test for the Caps, we will see what they can do. I just personally want to see them get  in a rhythm. They have only really played 2 games in 2 weeks since the end of the preseason. Should be a good one tonight.

Postgame Recap: Sharks 5 Caps 0

A sloppy game Tuesday night at the Verizon Center lead to the Caps first loss of the season to a red hot Sharks team who shutout the Caps behind Martin Jones 31 saves.

My Thoughts:

*Caps were sloppy, not a lot of passes went tape to tape and the Sharks were also very good at putting pressure on the defense that lead to it being difficult to get out of their own zone.

*Alex Ovechkin did no play last night due to personal reasons. Barry Trotz said it will remain personal but expects OV to play on Thursday.

*The Caps took a lot of early penalties and though they were able to kill some it didn't help the momentum of the game.

*Braden Holtby didn't have much help last night as the goals he gave up were not really his fault they were mostly defensive break downs and the last two goals were empty net.

*The turning point of the game could have been when Dmitry Orlov had a goal disallowed because Jay Beagle was called for goalie interference after a coaching challenge. In my opinion from the arena it looked like Beagle didn't touch Jones or if he did it didn't stop Jones from seeing or stopping the puck.

*Overall it's just game #2 on the season so no need to worry. A lot of Caps fans were turning the other way last night. However, this team will be fine. Just remember it took last years team a few games to get going as well. It's a long season.

Laich-Latta-Collins

Defense and Goalies:

Orpik-Carlson
Alzner-Niskanen

Holtby
Grubauer

*note Alex Ovechkin missed the morning skate and is a game time decision. If he doesn't play Stan Galiev will take his spot.

Postgame Recap: Caps 5 Devils 3

The Caps started their 2015-2016 off with what was a nice win over a Metro Division foe. A sloppy start lead to the Caps taking a 2-0 lead thanks to Jason Chimera and wait for it Brooks Orpik. The Devils would come back and tie the game. However, the captain Alex Ovechkin would score yet another highlight reel goal to kickoff a three goal third period to secure the win. Here are the Highlights.

My Thoughts:

*Brooks Orpik did not look as rusty as you might think after not playing in the preseason. After all he scored his first goal in 90+ games so that was good to see.

*The Caps were a little off to start the game, a little sloppy. They did not have a game in ten days which it showed early but as the game went on they played better.

*Matt Niskanen got a goal and assist on the night, his goal was a powerplay goal where the Devils pulled Keith Kinkaid so the Caps were setting up the powerplay with no goalie to get the puck past. It was something I have not seen before.

*Justin Williams had to good first game with the Caps with two assists, one on a shorthanded goal by Chimera in the first period.

*John Carlson had two assists last night, which was a quiet two assists but that's how he can accumulate points during the season. Carlson and Orpik had a good night being reunited.

*I have talked about how I want more offense from Tom Wilson this year and last night he made a great pass to get an assist on the Orpik goal. Wilson got the puck behind the net, showed good skating ability and made a good pass. He got banged up in the second period as it appeared a puck hit him in the leg but he returned in the third.

*Jason Chimera ended last season on a high note and he started this season off with a bang. Chimera scored the opening goal of the game and got an assist on the Orpik goal.

*Marcus Johansson did not play a ton in the preseason but he looked good last night with a powerplay goal that put the game completely in the Caps hands in the third period.

*The captain Alex Ovechkin got a goal and assist last night. His goal was a thing of beauty that fired up his teammates and turned the game in the Caps favor.

*Overall the Caps didn't play their best game but it is only the first game. A mark of a good team is when you win despite the sloppy start. I thought as the game went on they looked more like the team I expect them to be. Braden Holtby had a decent night, he made a big save on a breakaway which kept the game at 2-2. The goals he gave up were not really his fault in my opinion. So, overall not perfect but things that can be fixed, and easier to fix when you are celebrating the first win of the new season.

*Last thing the Hershey Bears opened their season in Springfield, the Bears beat the Falcons 5-1 behind goals by Camper, Carrick, Bourque, and two from rookie Riley Barber. Dan Ellis got the start in net and stopped 19 of 20 shots in the win for Coach Troy Mann.

Pregame Notes: Washington Capitals vs. New Jersey Devils

The day is here! The Washington Capitals open the 2015-2016 season at home against the New Jersey Devils. After an offseason that saw veteran Justin Williams and Olympic hero T.J Oshie come in to add to what was already a team with a lot of talent. Here is what the lineup will look like based on the morning skate.

Forwards:

Ovechkin-Kuznetsov-Oshie
Johansson-Burakovsky-Williams
Chimera-Beagle-Wilson
Laich-Latta-Collins

Defense and Goalies:

Orpik-Carlson
Alzner-Niskanen
Orlov-Schmidt

Holtby
Grubauer

Other Notes:

*Braden Holtby will start in net tonight after his best season as a pro last year. The questions will be if he is an elite goalie. I believe people will see soon enough.

*Tom Wilson will be on the third line to start the season. I think it's time for Willy to play up in the lineup. I would like to see his offensive numbers go up.

*Evgeny Kuznetsov will center the top line while Nick Backstrom is out for atleast the first five games. They looked good in the preseason.

*Brooks Orpik will make his season debut tonight after being out the entire preseason after recovering from a wrist surgery. I think he will be fine but I'm sure Trotz will keep an eye on him for his stamina.

*Keith Kinkaid will be in net tonight for the Devils as Cory Schneider played in the Devils opener last night.

*Sean Collins will be another Cap making his debut tonight after his hard work landed him a spot on the opening night roster. Collins will be on the 4th line with Michael Latta and Brooks Laich.

*Dmitry Orlov will play in his first regular season game since April of 2014. He has looked good in the preseason and will be with Nate Schmidt who will be a full time NHLer for the first time this year.

*Overall there is an excitement around this team and I am excited to finally see them play a regular season game. They open with a four game home stand and it is important to accumulate points early in the season.

Caps have their Roster to Start the Season

Today the Caps made their roster moved and have their team that they will begin the 2015-2016 season with. As they released Aaron Ness, Liam O'Brien, Justin Peters, Derek Roy, Ryan Stanton, and of course like I mentioned yesterday Chandler Stephenson. So here are the guys to start the season.

Forwards:

Nick Backstrom
Jay Beagle
Chris Brown
Andre Burakovsky
Jason Chimera
Sean Collins
Stan Galiev
Marcus Johansson
Evgeny Kuznetsov
Brooks Laich
Michael Latta
T.J Oshie
Alex Ovechkin
Justin Williams
Tom Wilson

Defensemen:

Karl Alzner
Matt Niskanen
Brooks Orpik
John Carlson
Dmitry Orlov
Nate Schmidt
Taylor Chorney

Goalies:

Braden Holtby
Philipp Grubauer

My Thoughts:

*I am a bit surprised that Derek Roy was released but I believe it is because Barry Trotz has faith in Andre Burakovsky and Jay Beagle to play well while Nick Backstrom is out.

*Chris Brown is banged up so he will be out for a little bit.

*Happy for Stan Galiev, and Sean Collins who were on the bubble when camp started but have made the team out of camp. Sean Collins has been a very good hard working two way forward.

*Philipp Grubauer is making the step up, not surprised after he received a one way contract back in the offseason.

*Taylor Chorney did enough to show the coaches that he earned the 7th defensemen spot over other candidates.

*More Caps related news as they have signed Brandon Wheat Kings prospect Tim McGauley to a three year entry level contract. McGauley, 20 y/o, scored 42 goals and 63 assists for 105 points in 72 games for the Wheat Kings last year. So another prospect to keep an eye on this year.

Postgame Recap: Caps 6 Islanders 2

The Caps closed out the preseason with a dominant performance at the Verizon Center on Sunday evening. With the win the Caps finished the preseason 5-0-2. Hopefully that will carry over into the regular season.

My Thoughts:

*The first line was great yesterday. Evgeny Kuznetsov had a goal and three assists, T.J Oshie had a goal and two assist, while the captain Alex Ovechkin had two goals. The were moving the puck around with ease. It was fun to watch and I think the chemistry is where it needs to be.

*John Carlson had himself a game as well as he scored a power play goals and added three assists of his own.

*Braden Holtby started and finished the game as he faced 24 shots and made 22 saves.

*Jay Beagle scored a highlight reel goal in the first period with a toe drag and a wicked wrister to the top shelf. Tom Wilson would get the assist on the goal.

*The Caps have sent Chandler Stephenson to Hershey yesterday. Stephenson has played well and is improving but it appears they are not going to rush him into the NHL quite yet.

*It appears to me that Taylor Chorney might have won the 7th defensemen spot, again we will know for sure by Tuesday but we might know more by today.

*Decision time on Derek Roy is coming but the interesting thing is do the Caps have salary cap space to sign the veteran who is on a Pro Tryout. Also I have heard rumblings of Brooks Laich may be in danger.

*Overall I think what I saw in the preseason. I think it is clear that the team has the talent to compete in the Metro division. It will be a long tough road of 82 games but the fun is about to start.

Postgame Recap: Caps 2 Bruins 1 SO

Last night we got to see more of the 3 on 3 overtime, however after a penalty on Jay Beagle for hooking the Caps killed off a 4 on 3 powerplay. The Caps would then win the game in a shootout thanks to T.J Oshie, Evgeny Kuznetsov and Braden Holtby.

My Thoughts:

*The Caps started the game a little flat. Philip Grubauer played the first period and was left out to dry after Louis Eriksson was left wide open. Grubauer made a great save on the first shot but the rebound trickled in to give the Bruins A 1-0 lead.

*The Caps did get better as the game went on. Chance after chance, Evgeny Kuznetsov and Justin Williams were stopped on breakaways and Williams also hit the post in the third period. Tuuka Rask was very good last night. Their back up Smith came in and played well but the Caps were able to solve him.

*Alex Ovechkin scored late in the third to tie the game. Kuznetsov made a nice pass from behind the net and OV put the puck in. T.J Oshie picked up the secondary assist.

*It appears that the third line center battle might end up going to Jay Beagle. Beags had a great season last year and has worked hard to get to that point. Also, while at the game I watched Derek Roy and Chandler Stephenson closely and neither of those guys have taken that job. Stephenson is a prospect and has time to develop in Hershey if needed. Derek Roy is an interesting situation with being on a tryout.

*The battle for the 7th defensemen still isn't clear yet either. Aaron Ness and Taylor Chorney at times didn't play well last night. Again it might be Ryan Stanton's job to lose.

*Braden Holtby came in at the beginning of the second period and played well. Stopping all 23 shots he faced and then made all the stops in the shootout.

*I am encouraged from what I have seen from Michael Latta, Tom Wilson, and Dmitry Orlov. I believe those guys are developing their skills more. It will take a little time still.

*Overall the win gives the Caps a 4-0-2 record with just one more preseason game left and about 6 or 7 cuts left. This will be an interesting weekend for sure.

Postgame Recap: Hurricanes 4 Caps 3 SO

The Caps got off to a good start Wednesday in Carolina taking a 3-1 lead. However, penalties lead to the Canes tying the game and eventually winning in a shootout thanks to Nathan Gerbe. The Caps now fall to 3-0-2 in the preseason. (Again no Highlights)

My Thoughts:

*Alex Ovechkin scored his second goal of the preseason just 20 seconds into the game. Karl Alzner and Braden Holtby got assists on the play.

*Barry Trotz called out Stan Galiev yesterday and Galiev responded by scoring in the first period after the Canes tied it at 1-1. Jason Chimera and Ryan Stanton pick up assists, Stanton is again making his cases for the 7th defensemen position.

*The Caps would then go up 3-1 as Michael Latta would score for the first time in a while, whether it is  preseason or regular season. Sean Collins and Brooks Laich with the assists.

*Sean Collins again seemed to make some type of impact as he got an assist. Collins may find himself as an extra forward on this team if he continues his strong play. We will have to wait and see though.

*Braden Holtby started in net and stopped 20 of 23 shots and then was taken out for Justin Peters. Peters stopped all 4 of the shots he faced.

*Marcus Johansson made his debut last night and in 17:05 of ice time was a -1.

*Overall I did not see the game because it was not on TV, however with that said it appeared that the Caps were in control of the game but penalties in the 2nd period got the Canes back in the game and changed momentum. The Caps has a strong 3rd period outshooting the Canes 11-3, and outshot them 4-1 in the overtime period. However it wold not be enough.

*T.J Oshie scored in the shootout for the Caps. However Kuznetsov, Galiev, and Burakovsky would be stopped and Nathan Gerbe who tied it for the Canes in the 2nd period would be Justin Peters to win the game.
