Postgame Recap: Caps 2 Bruins 1 SO

Last night we got to see more of the 3 on 3 overtime, however after a penalty on Jay Beagle for hooking the Caps killed off a 4 on 3 powerplay. The Caps would then win the game in a shootout thanks to T.J Oshie, Evgeny Kuznetsov and Braden Holtby.

My Thoughts:

*The Caps started the game a little flat. Philip Grubauer played the first period and was left out to dry after Louis Eriksson was left wide open. Grubauer made a great save on the first shot but the rebound trickled in to give the Bruins A 1-0 lead.

*The Caps did get better as the game went on. Chance after chance, Evgeny Kuznetsov and Justin Williams were stopped on breakaways and Williams also hit the post in the third period. Tuuka Rask was very good last night. Their back up Smith came in and played well but the Caps were able to solve him.

*Alex Ovechkin scored late in the third to tie the game. Kuznetsov made a nice pass from behind the net and OV put the puck in. T.J Oshie picked up the secondary assist.

*It appears that the third line center battle might end up going to Jay Beagle. Beags had a great season last year and has worked hard to get to that point. Also, while at the game I watched Derek Roy and Chandler Stephenson closely and neither of those guys have taken that job. Stephenson is a prospect and has time to develop in Hershey if needed. Derek Roy is an interesting situation with being on a tryout.

*The battle for the 7th defensemen still isn't clear yet either. Aaron Ness and Taylor Chorney at times didn't play well last night. Again it might be Ryan Stanton's job to lose.

*Braden Holtby came in at the beginning of the second period and played well. Stopping all 23 shots he faced and then made all the stops in the shootout.

*I am encouraged from what I have seen from Michael Latta, Tom Wilson, and Dmitry Orlov. I believe those guys are developing their skills more. It will take a little time still.

*Overall the win gives the Caps a 4-0-2 record with just one more preseason game left and about 6 or 7 cuts left. This will be an interesting weekend for sure.
