Postgame Recap: Caps 4 Avalanche 2

For the first time in a while the Caps put together a very good 60 minutes in route to a franchise record 55th win of the season. The score is actually a bit misleading as the Caps outshot the Aves 47-19 and hit the post 5 times.

My Thoughts:

*The Caps came out firing but post after post left the game scoreless going into the 2nd period when Jay Beagle was able to tuck the puck past Semyon Varlamov for his 8th goal of the season to give the Caps a 1-0 lead.

*Soon after the Caps would get a power play and Alex Ovechkin would score his 45th of the season to make it 2-0. Marcus Johansson and Evgeny Kuznetsov were able to get assists on the goal.

*The were not done as Jason Chimera redirected a pass from Mike Richards to score his 19th of the season to put the Caps up by 3. John Carlson also picked up a assist on the goal.

*The Caps continued to play well but a couple of bounces made it 3-2, but T.J Oshie scored a empty net goal for his 25th to put the game away. Daniel Winnik and Jay Beagle pick up assists.

*Braden Holtby did not see a lot of action as the Caps took the play to the Aves basically all night. Holts picked up win #47 on the season and is 1 win away from tying the league record for wins in a season. Not to mention if he does get the record he will have done it in less games that Marty Broduer.

*Nick Backstrom was out last night so Marcus Johansson played on the top line, and I thought it was one of his best games of the season. Jojo played with a lot of speed and had some chances to score but he hit the post.

*Overall the most important thing about last night is the Caps played the right way. They played with intensity from the beginning of the game till the end. That is what I want to see for the last 5 games leading into the playoffs.

*It is always nice to check another milestone off the list. With the 55th win this is now the best season in Washington Capitals history. Only one more thing to achieve before the the real season starts.
