Game 6 Recap: Islanders 3 Caps 1 (Series tied 3-3)

The Caps could not close out the series as the Islanders inspired effort forced a winner take all Game 7 at Verizon Center on Monday. Nikolay Kulemin proved the game winning goal for the Isles about half way through the third period. The Islanders would add a empty net goal. Here are the highlights.

Caps/Isles Game 6:

My Thoughts:

*John Carlson scored on a power play late in the first to tie the game. After that the Caps turned the momentum but then gave it back to the Islanders.

*Jay Beagle hit the crossbar with about 5 minutes left in the game that would have tied it. That was were the game was truly finished.

*The Caps stopped playing on the Kulemin goal, but I don't see how it is legal for Johnny Boycuk to pick up Joel Ward and slam him to the ice before the puck found it's way in the Caps zone.

*Alex Ovechkin has to play better, he still tries to stick handle around their entire team, he needs to settle down and just shoot or dump the puck in for Ward to get it.

*The Caps had some good chances but in particular Mike Green and Matt Niskanen had two great chances and missed the net.

*I don't think the Caps played as well as they could have and the Islanders played a desperate game to try not to close the Nassau Coliseum with a loss.

*Braden Holtby played very well, but was left out to dry on the winning goal because Niskanen left the crease and Alex Ovechkin was too worried about hitting Tavares. So, the two players that should have been in their position were not.

*Overall this has been a heck of a battle between two evenly matched teams, the Caps have the better talent but the Islanders have been able to hang on in the series. Game 7 will be a nerve wrecking experience. The Caps history in Game 7's is not good, but Barry Trotz has preached to the guys to make their own history. We will see if they can respond to adversity again.

*Last quick note the Hershey Bears beat the Worcester Sharks 3-1 to take a 2-0 series lead in their first round best of five. The Bears will now need to win just one game out of 3 at home as the #2 seed in the Eastern Conference. Pheonix Copley has been good in net and the Bears got goals from Jim O'Brien, Chris Conner, and Cam Schilling.

What's Next: Game 7 Monday April 27th vs. New York Islander 7:30 p.m on NBCSN
