Pregame Notes: Washington Capitals at. New York Islanders

The Caps are back on the road for one more game before the Winter Classic for a big game on the island to take on the Islanders. The Caps are coming off of a impressive 3-0 win in Pittsburgh. Here are the lines during the morning skate.

Forwards:

Chimera-Backstrom-Ovechkin
Johansson-Kuznetsov-Brouwer
Laich-Fehr-Ward
Beagle-Latta-Wilson

Defense and Goalies:

Orpik-Carlson
Alzner-Niskanen
Hillen-Green

Holtby
Peters

Other Notes:

*I expect Braden Holtby to be in between the pipes yet again as he has been too good to not put in the net. Arguably playing his best hockey of his career. Jaro Halak is expected to make his return to Islanders lineup tonight as well.

*Jason Chimera might find is way on the top line tonight after being a healthy scratch against Pittsburgh.

*It looks like Andre Burakovsky will be the forward that sits tonight with Chimera's return.

*Jack Hillen played with Mike Green in Pittsburgh and is taking rushes with him during the morning skate so it appears that Nate Schmidt will be a healthy scratch on defense.

*The Caps and Islanders played two emotionally charged games in November. Tonight if the Caps win they will pull up to 3 points behind the Isles.

*The Caps are trending up, and are heading in the right direction. It is important to keep the ball rolling tonight as the New York Rangers are on a roll as well as the Caps. So every point will be important from here on out.

Postgame Recap: Caps 3 Penguins 0

The Caps made a statement last night, that they can compete with the Pens again. Braden Holtby was stellar and Eric Fehr scored twice. Here are the Highlights.

Caps/Pens Highlights:

My Thoughts:

*Braden Holtby was outstanding once again last night. He made some great saves but his best was when Sidney Crosby had a breakaway and Holts stopped it. The Caps were up 1-0 at the time so it was a big moment in the game.

*Eric Fehr scored two goals, both were a product of going to the net hard and getting rebounds with traffic in front of the net.

*Marcus Johansson got back on the score sheet with his 2 on 1 goal to put the Caps up 2-0 in the third period at that point.

*Matt Niskanen and Brooks Orpik both played very solid games in their return to Pittsburgh. Orpik had an assist on the Johansson goal.

*The Caps played a heavy game last night. The NBCSN broadcast team compared it to the Western Conference teams that Barry Trotz coached in Nashville.

*The Hershey Bears lost to the Binghampton Senators 4-3 in overtime. The Bears got goals from Dustin Gazley, Chris Brown, and Kris Newbury.

Caps Lineup against Pens

This is how the lines will look from the morning skate.

Forwards:

Ovechkin-Backstrom-Wilson
Johansson-Kuznetsov-Brouwer
Laich-Fehr-Ward
Latta-Burakovsky-Beagle

Defense and Goalies:

Orpik-Carlson
Alzner-Niskanen
Hillen/Schmidt-Green

Holtby
Peters

*It appears that Tom Wilson will be back on the first line tonight.
*I am not sure who will play with Mike Green. Nate Schmidt played in New York but not sure who will be in tonight.

Pregame Notes: Washington Capitals at. Pittsburgh Penguins

The Caps are back in action tonight as they get to face their rival Pittsburgh Penguins in the Steel City tonight. The Caps are coming off a tough 4-2 loss in New York against the Rangers on the 23rd. The morning skate is not till 11:30 am so the lineup will be available later so here are some notes on tonight's games.

Other Notes:

*I expect Braden Holtby and Marc-Andre Fluery to both be between the pipes tonight. Both have had good season to date. Holts will look to rebound from the loss in NY.

*Another Crosby and Ovechkin game this time with new coaches. The Pens have no missed a beat while the Caps are now starting to play well under Barry Trotz.

*I believe that Tom Wilson will be back in the lineup tonight. I think he can add some toughness against the Pens. If not then Eric Fehr might be put in that RW spot. However, Barry Trotz might decide to put Willy on the 4th line till he gets his legs going again.

*Evgeny Kuznetsov has been playing well and looks more and more confident. I know I keep saying that but he is slowly starting to accumulate points.

*Matt Niskanen and Brooks Orpik along with Todd Reirden make their return to Pittsburgh. Probably will be weird for Orpik who won the Stanley Cup with the Pens in 2008-2009.

*Nick Backstrom will play a major role in tonight's game. He will have to be solid against Sidney Crosby and Evgeni Malkin.

*The Caps Penalty Kill will have to be good tonight as well, if they can hold the Pens on the PK then the Caps will have a chance to win.

*One last thing is the Caps have to play better then in New York. Play three periods not one. If they can play with energy and get the cycle going they can frustrate the Pens and can keep the puck in their zone.

Postgame Recap: Rangers 4 Caps 2

The Caps did not play well the first two period last night. When they did get their game going they dominated the Rangers. If it wasn't for a double minor on Nick Backstrom for High Sticking and a what is now apparently a penalty for hand pass by Jason Chimera. The Caps would have had 5 or so more minutes to fire away at the Rangers. Here are the Highlights:

Caps/Rangers Highlights:

My Thoughts:

*Tom Wilson ended up being the forward that came out for Andre Burakovsky to make his return to the lineup. Wilson had had a couple of games where he wasn't playing as well as he was before. But Barry Trotz has done this with all the young players this season.

*Alex Ovechkin played well and scored to bring the Caps within 1 goal, but again the Caps didn't even have a chance to tie the game with the penalties.

*Evgeny Kuznetsov scored his 4th of the season to get the scoring going for the Caps.

*The Caps had 21 shots in the 3rd period, and if you watched the game they were a totally different team in the 3rd then in the first two period. No doubt in my mind if the Caps played a solid 3 period game they would have atleast had the game go into overtime. Can't play one period and beat the Rangers. With that said they almost came back from it.

*Rick Nash is having again a great season, he scored two goals an assist and was the difference I guess. First goal was shot off him, second goal Holtby gets 9 out of 10 times. Not to take away from the player that Rick Nash is but he got a little bit of luck last night, but that's hockey.

*At the end of the day it's one regulation loss in the last 10 games, and the team was playing on back to back nights against a team that was sitting at home waiting for them. Not that New York is a bad team, we all know how good they can be. However, the Caps did not have their best on the ice last night for the entire 60 minutes. They came to play in the 3rd but that wasn't enough, but still a lot of positives about the Caps going into the Christmas break.

*The Caps are off until Saturday when they are in Pittsburgh to take on the Pens. Till then to all hockey fans out there have a safe and Happy Holidays! If you miss hockey don't forget a Episode 2 of the Epix Road to the Winter Classic series aired last night.

Pregame Notes: Washington Capitals at. New York Rangers

The Caps are on a roll as they make their first trip to Madison Square Garden this season. The thing is the Rangers are just as hot as the Caps right now. Tonight is a big opportunity for the Caps as a win will give them a 4 point lead on the Rangers for 3rd in the Metro Division. Now their is no morning skate with back to back games so I will not know the lineup till gametime.

Other Notes:

*Barry Trotz might consider giving Braden Holtby another start tonight despite playing last night. However, the Caps have a few days off after tonight's game so we will have to wait and see. It does look like the Rangers will have "The King" Henrik Lundqvist in the net tonight.

*From what I have read we might see Andre Burakovsky and Nate Schmidt back in the lineup tonight. It is unclear who both of them will replace, so will have to wait till pregame warmups to see. It looks like Barry Trotz might want a couple guys with fresh legs in.

*Nick Backstrom is playing great hockey, and he can be a difference maker tonight. His defensive play will be vital to tonight's outcome.

*Someone the Caps have to be aware of tonight is Rick Nash who is having a fantastic start to his season. He is already in the 20 goal category.

*Tonight will be another battle between Ryan McDonagh and Dan Girardi and Alex Ovechkin. In my opinion they are one of the best defensive pairs in the NHL, it will be fun to see how the Caps do against them.

*The Caps recent success is due to getting all 4 lines rollings and playing well. No longer are the Caps depending all on Ovechkin and Backstrom. As Jay Beagle, Joel Ward, Eric Fehr, and the new defense corp have made the Caps a tough team to play against.

*A big key to tonight's game is to remain physical. The Caps have forchecked very well in the last 9 games and that's why they are starting to win. I know they played last night but this is a playoff caliber game tonight against the defending Eastern Conference Champions.

*One last thing is that the Caps need to continue to get to the front of the net. Henrik Lundqvist is a great goaltender, and the way you can score on him is shooting high and getting in front of the net and try to make him feel uncomfortable.

*Gametime 7 p.m on CSN

Postgame Recap: Caps 2 Senators 1

The Caps were able to keep the ball rolling last night with a tough 2-1 win against the Ottawa Senators. The Caps are now 7-0-2 in their last 9 games going into tonight's big matchup against he New York Rangers. Here are the highlights.

Caps/Sens Highlights:

My Thoughts:

*First things is first, the Beast was AWAKE. Braden Holtby made 38 saves and in my opinion was the reason the Caps were able to win. Holtby made save after save and the Caps were able to give him just enough goal support to secure 2 points.

*Jay Beagle is having the best season of his career. Beagle is skating and playing well along the boards, and he is pitching in with goals. He even saw time on the first line last night as well.

*Evgeny Kuznetsov was good last night, he looks more confident and made a great pass on the Beagle goal.

*Nick Backstrom continues to be on fire after he scored his 6th goal in 5 games, the goal last night would prove to be the GWG.

*Alex Ovechkin didn't score but he played his tail off. What people are failing to realize is though he is score at a decent rate, OV is a plus 6 in the plus-minus category. He was a minus last night but he had nothing to do with how the Sens scored.

*Tom Wilson is hitting a bit of a wall, he was benched a little last night. Wilson tried to make a big hit in the first period but hit the defensemen from behind. However, Trotz knows what to do when it comes to young players so I expect Wilson to bounce back.

*Overall the Caps are doing a lot of things right. First, they are getting in front of the net on a more consistent basis, as well as cycling the puck along the boards, and finally they are resilient. They are now only 6 points behind the Islanders and keep inching up. Things are going well for the Caps and it's fun to watch this team grow.

Highlights of Hershey's 2-1 OT loss to Springfield (Dec.20)

Pregame Notes: Washington Capitals vs. Ottawa Senators

The Caps are making a quick trip back home as they host the Ottawa Senators tonight in D.C. The Caps are on one of their best stretches in some time with a 6-0-2 record over the last 8 games. Here is what the lineup looked like at the morning skate.

Forwards:

Ovechkin-Backstrom-Wilson
Johansson-Kuznetsov-Brouwer
Laich-Fehr-Ward
Chimera-Latta-Beagle

Defense and Goalies:

Orpik-Carlson
Alzner-Niskanen
Hillen-Green

Holtby
Peters

Other Notes:

*It appears that Jack Hillen will be in place of Nate Schmidt once again on the third defense pair. Schmidt will watch from the pressbox as Coach Trotz will have him look at certain things.

*Braden Holtby looks to start tonight, it is unclear if he will play again tomorrow or if Justin Peters will get the Rangers tomorrow. With the Caps off till Saturday after tomorrow's game Holtby might get both games.

*The Caps have lost 7 straight games against the Sens, but if the Caps can continue the way they have been playing lately then they will be fine.

*One thing I have noticed during this current 8 game stretch is that the Caps have had more commitment to having more traffic in front of the other teams goalie. Look at the Mike Green goal from Saturday, it is a perfect example.

*For the first time in a while I feel great about where this team is headed. Not just that wins are starting to come but the way they are playing the game. They are starting to reflect Barry Trotz more and more with each game.

*Craig Anderson I expect to be in net for the Sens but we will have to wait and see closer to gametime. One player the Caps will have to keep an eye on is Bobby Ryan, he is a guy that can score a ton.

*The key tonight is not making this a trap game. The Caps have played very well on the road but have struggled at home at times. The Sens I expect to come out hard but if the Caps can score first and keep the positive vibe positive then I think the Caps can take care of business.

Postgame Recap: Caps 4 Devils 0

The Caps ended another successful week with a nice decisive win in New Jersey. The Caps are now 6-0-2 in their last eight games and are again moving in the right direction.

Caps/Devils Highlights:

My Thoughts:

*Nate Schmidt was a healthy scratch last night. Barry Trotz said that was because he was starting to see mistakes and bad habits creep into his game. Jack Hillen would find his way back into the lineup.

*Nick Backstrom had 2 goals and an assist, Backstrom has been great this season and doesn't get enough credit for what he brings to the ice.

*Alex Ovechkin had himself a highlight reel goal, and Coach Trotz said OV could have easily had 5 goals.

*Tom Wilson was benched in the 2nd period because Coach Trotz didn't like how he was playing. Trotz wanted to recharge Wilson and he had a better 3rd period.

*Braden Holtby shut the door on the Devils completely as he continues to be strong in net. Hopefully the trend continues.

*The Hershey Bears lost 2-1 in overtime to the Springfield Falcons, the Bears only goal came from Chandler Stephenson.

*Expect to see Andre Burakovsky and Aaron Volpatti back with the Caps this week. Both of them were assigned to the Bears but Hershey Head Coach Troy Mann said last night they will both be heading back to D.C. Volpatti has yet to play in a game for the Caps this season.

Pregame Notes: Washington Capitals at. New Jersey Devils

The Caps are back in New Jersey to take on the Devils yet again. The Caps are coming off a character win in Columbus on Thursday and will look to make it 8 games in a row with atleast a point. Here is what I think the lineup will look like tonight.

Forwards:

Ovechkin-Backstrom-Wilson
Johansson-Kuznetsov-Brouwer
Laich-Fehr-Ward
Chimera-Latta-Beagle

Defense and Goalies:

Orpik-Carlson
Alzner-Niskanen
Schmidt-Green

Holtby
Peters

What to Watch:

*The Caps are playing some good hockey and it is important they keep doing that. The Devils are a team the Caps have had some success this season against. We will see if they can keep the ball rolling.

*Evgeny Kuznetsov is looking more and more comfortable with each game, he is skating well and making good plays. The points don't reflect that yet but I think he is making progress.

*Michael Latta played great last time out, the line of Chimera-Latta-Beagle have played very well. They have been putting pressure on the forcheck and causing turnovers.

*The Hershey Bears lost to the Lehigh Valley Phantoms 2-0 last night, Andre Burakovsky played and hit 2 posts. From what I have heard is he will play for the Bears tonight then come back up to the Caps.

*Braden Holtby I expect to play tonight, but don't be surprised if Justin Peters gets a came either Monday or Tuesday with back to backs.

*Brooks Laich is playing better and better with each game, as long as he stays healthy I believe he is a valuable 3rd line player. The team seems to do better with him in the lineup.

*Mike Green made a difference Thursday with two assists, first on the tying goal and second on the winner in overtime. That's the Mike Green that is worth keeping around.

Postgame Recap: Caps 5 Blue Jackets 4 OT

The Caps were able to get back at the Blue Jackets with a huge win after Mike Green set up Eric Fehr to put away an improving Columbus Blue Jackets squad. Here are the Highlights of what was a crazy game.

Caps/Jackets Highlights:

My Thoughts:

*First thing is Michael Latta played his best game as a pro last night. Not only did he get in a fight, but he had two assists. The first was on a beautiful feed to Jason Chimera, the second on Karl Alzner's goal that tied the game at 3 in the third period.

*The Caps were resilient last night after giving up a two goal lead and falling down twice in the third. However, they kept plugging away and got two big points. Now the Caps sit only 6 points behind the New York Islanders and are back in 3rd in the Metro Division.

*Braden Holtby played ok last night, not one of his better games but he will be a pass because he has played very well this last 15 or so starts.

*Eric Fehr and Joel Ward both had goals in this game. They had both been quiet the last few games but had solid games last night.

*The Caps played a great first period, moving their legs and pressuring the Columbus defensemen. Again they were unable to solve Sergei Bobrovsky on the powerplay but were still able to find ways to beat him.

*This morning on Twitter it is said that Andre Burakovsky has be loaned to the Hershey Bears, Burakovsky has been out of the lineup lately. Might not be a bad idea to let him learn and play a lot for the Bears. The Bears are in Lehigh Valley Phantoms tonight,  and host the Springfield Falcons on Saturday.

*Overall last night was a huge win for the Caps. Two huge point against a Metro Division opponent and now they have earn points in 7 straight games. That is a good trend going into the holidays.

Pregame Notes: Washington Capitals at. Columbus Blue Jackets

*Update: Kuznetsov on 2nd line

The Caps make their first trip to Nationwide Arena tonight as the Caps and Blue Jackets will face each other for a third time this season. The Jackets came into Verizon Center last week and beat the Caps in overtime. Here is the lineup for tonight's tilt.

Forwards:

Ovechkin-Backstrom-Wilson
Johansson-Latta-Brouwer
Laich-Fehr-Ward
Chimera-Kuznetsov-Beagle

Defense and Goalies:

Orpik-Carlson
Alzner-Niskanen
Schmidt-Green

Holtby
Peters

What to Watch:

*It looks like Michael Latta will skate with Marcus Johansson and Troy Brouwer tonight. So that means Evgeny Kuznetsov will be put down in the lineup.

*Andre Burakovsky will be a healthy scratch again for the Caps. Burakovsky has been practicing and learning. Trotz has been keeping the line of communication open with Burakovsky to keep the younster's sprit up.

*No official word but I am 90% sure Braden Holtby will be in the net again tonight, if any changes I will update right before game time. Sergei Bobrovsky has been on fire for Columbus lately I'm sure he will face the Caps tonight.

*The Blue Jackets are playing very well and tonight's game will be a tough one for the Caps. However, I think that it is a winnable game because the Caps have played well lately too.

*Last time out the Caps had a ton of powerplays against Columbus but Bobrovsky turned everything away. The key will be getting traffic in front of the net for deflections and rebounds. Have to put pressure on the Jackets early and often.

*Troy Brouwer has played very well lately and he can make a difference when he is moving his feet. We will have to see how he does if indeed Michael Latta will be centering that line tonight.

*The Caps have earned points in 6 straight games, it is important that they continue to get points because the Metro Division is going to tighten up with the way the Rangers and the Blue Jackets have been playing the last week.

Postgame Recap: Panthers 2 Caps 1 SO

The Caps and Panthers played a very even game last night. After a 20 round shootout where every player on each teams bench got to shoot, the Panthers came away victorious.

Caps/Panthers Highlights:

My Thoughts:

*The Caps didn't play poorly but they were never able to really put a ton of sustained pressure on the Panthers.

*Mike Green's turnover lead to the only Panthers goal. Other than that the defense corp played very well and Braden Holtby was once again very good but did not get enough goal support.

*The Caps have now earned points in 6 straight games, so even though they lost progress is still being made.

*Troy Brouwer scored on a powerplay in the 2nd period. Brouwer has played very well in this current 6 game stretch.

*Roberto Luongo was very good for the Panthers, even though the Caps didn't put a ton of pressure on him he was up to the task when the Caps did get chances.

*This game was so even to the point of a 20 round shootout. The longest in NHL History! The Caps had chances to win in the shootout but didn't. At the end of the day it wasn't really a bad loss. This team is playing better and the Panthers are not a bad team.

*I like the way Evgeny Kuznetsov is skating, he doesn't look to be as hesitant as he was early in the season.

*Michael Latta played a very solid defensive game, he is playing physical and developing into a good bottom six forward for the Caps. What is also helping is he is doing very well in the faceoff circle.

*Overall they earned a point and still are playing better. They are in the middle of a battle in the Metro and need to win yes but there are a lot of winnable games coming up. So, the next week will be huge for the Caps.

Pregame Notes: Washington Capitals at. Florida Panthers

The Caps are back in action again as they are in Sunrise, Florida to take on the surprising Florida Panthers. The Panthers are currently 12-8-8 with 32 points and are playing very well. The Caps are also starting to play well so this could be a good matchup tonight. Here is the lineup based on the morning skate.

Forwards:

Ovechkin-Backstrom-Wilson
Johansson-Kuznetsov-Brouwer
Laich-Fehr-Ward
Chimera-Latta-Beagle

Defense and Goalies:

Orpik-Carlson
Alzner-Niskanen
Schmidt-Green

Holtby
Peters

What to Watch:

*Jason Chimera appears to be returning to the lineup tonight after being a healthy scratch Saturday against the Lightning. Chimmer was embarrassed that he was a scratch so I expect to see him play one of his best games of his season tonight.

*Alex Ovechkin has been a little bit quiet when it comes to goals lately but I still think he is playing pretty well. The top line was the catalyst to beating the Lightning twice last week.

*Braden Holtby will start again in net for the Caps, while the Panthers are going to go with Roberto Luongo. The Caps took on Al Montoya in their previous game where the Caps won 2-1 in a shootout.

*It looks like from the morning skate that Andre Burakovsky will watch from the press box again. Barry Trotz has a plan for Burakovsky to practice and watch things and learn. That's why they are going to keep him with the Caps instead of going to the World Junior Championships.

*The Caps have played very well the last 5 games, and if they can have a strong week they may be able to inch closer to the Islanders. The Caps are 9 points back but have two games in hand on the Isles.

*Just a reminder once again the Epix series "Road to the Winter Classic" starts tonight at 10 pm on either Epix.com or NHL.com. Now with the Caps having a later start time the game might still be on. However, you can probably go back and watch from the beginning when you want to.

*The Caps will have to play with an edge tonight, the Panthers are a solid club. The Caps need to play with intensity even though I'm sure their will not be a big crowd in Florida.

*Just a note that the Hershey Bears fell to the Wilkes-Barre/Scranton Pens 3-2 on overtime on Sunday.

Bears defeat Binghampton 5-2

Bears/Sens Highlights:

*Stan Galiev now has 8 goals in 8 games.

*Chris Conner had a goal and 3 assists.

Postgame Recap: Caps 4 Lightning 2

The Caps won their 4th game out of the last 5 after surviving a late Lightning rally. Nick Backstrom scored his first regular season hat trick and Eric Fehr iced the game with an emtpy net goal in the final minute.

Caps/Lightning Highlights:

My Thoughts:

*Braden Holtby played a great game and like Barry Trotz said deserved a shutout. The Tyler Johnson goal late in the third was a perfect shot, and Matt Carle's goal was where the line that was out there had been out there for 2 minutes and Holts didn't have much help.

*The top line produced against the Lightning again. Not only did Nick Backstrom get a hat trick, but Tom Wilson had two assists, and Alex Ovechkin had two assist and hit a post. Much like Tuesday night thought the top line made a difference.

*The biggest turning point of the game was in the second period when the Caps had to kill off a 2 minutes 5 on 3 and they did. Braden Holtby was great and the penalty killers had their best kill of the season. After killing the penalty the crowd and the Caps responded as Nick Backstrom would score a few minutes later.

*Andre Burakovsky returned to the lineup and looked a little rusty. I think he will be fine just needs a little more ice time.

*I am really happy with the development of Michael Latta at the 4th line center position. He has been great in the faceoff circle and has toughness and plays with an edge.

*The only concerning thing that I can say is late in the game with a 3-0 lead the game should have been over. The Lightning made a push yes but the Caps were pinned in their own zone for way too long and when trying to get the puck out they turned the puck over. However, two points is two points.

Highlights of Hershey loss to Syracuse Dec. 12th

Syracuse 4 Hershey 1:

Pregame Notes: Washington Capitals vs. Tampa Bay Lightning

The Caps will look to bounce back tonight as they once again take on the Tampa Bay Lightning this time at the Verizon Center. The Caps played a solid game though they lost in overtime on Thursday. If the Caps can beat the Lightning for a second time in a week it will be a very productive week for the Caps. Here's the lines at the morning skate.

Forwards:

Ovechkin-Backstrom-Wilson
Johansson-Kuznetsov-Brouwer
Laich-Fehr-Ward
Latta-Burakovsky-Beagle

Defense and Goalies:

Orpik-Carlson
Alzner-Niskanen
Schmidt-Green

Holtby
Peters

What to Watch:

*Jason Chimera will be a healthy scratch after his penalty that everyone including Barry Trotz was unacceptable. So, that means that Andre Burakvosky will be back in the lineup tonight after being a scratch the last few games.

*The Caps had a strong game on Tuesday in Tampa because the top line played well and made a difference right away. Alex Ovechkin scored 40 seconds into the game, it's important that the top line get going again tonight.

*Braden Holtby once again will start in net tonight, I expect that Ben Bishop will start for Tampa.

*Evgeny Kuznetsov is on a 3 game point streak with 1 goal and 2 assists in that period. That came when Andre Burakovsky was a healthy scratch.

*Burakovksy will return but will center the 4th line with Michael Latta and Jay Beagle. Beagle, who blocked a shot in overtime Thursday was not injured enough to keep him out tonight.

*Mike Green had a solid return to the lineup on Thursday. I would expect his ice time to slowly go up, I like how Carlson, Niskanen, and Green have been playing on the point on the powerplays.

*The Hershey Bears opened their weekend with a 4-1 loss in Syracuse. Stan Galiev who has been on fire scored yet again, however the Bears gave up 4 goals in a row. They host the Binghamton Senators tonight.

Busy Weekend for Hershey

The Bears have another 3 games in 3 nights this weekend. The Bears are on the road to take on the Syracuse Crunch tonight, Saturday they return to the Giant Center to play the Binghamton Senators, and finally another trip to Wilkes-Barre/Scranton to take on the Pens again.

Somethings I have been keeping my eye on is some of the Caps prospects. The Bears have a solid group of AHL regulars but a couple of Caps prospects are playing well.

1. Stan Galiev-7 goals 2 assists 9 pts in 17 games. Galiev who coming into this year was looking like a chance at being a Cap someday was fading away has put his name back in the conversation with his current play. Galiev (#22 in picture above) is becoming a sniper on the powerplay for the Bears.

2. Philip Grubauer-9-6-1 with a 2.16 GAA and a .922 save% and 3 shutouts. Grubauer is having a solid start to his season has the full time starter. His numbers are getting better and I think it's great for his development to play a lot.

3. Chris Brown-5 goals 2 assist in 14 games. Brown played a few games for the Caps to start the season. I am keeping my eye on him because he is playing well and could be the number call up for the Caps if they need a forward.

4. Pheonix Copley-4-3-0 with a 1.84 GAA and a .929 save% with 2 shutouts. Copley has been emerging as a solid prospect for the Caps. With Edward Pasquale injury Copley has had the chance to start a few games for the Bears and is playing well. He impressed me during the rookie game back during training camp.

5. Connor Carrick-3 goals and 8 assist for 11 points in 25 games. Carrick played for the Caps last year and is in the mix to make the Caps again in the future. However, he is a -9 and needs to play a lot. This is important for his development to play and be one of the Bears top defensemen.

Postgame Recap: Blue Jackets 3 Caps 2 OT

The Caps played a solid game last night, outshooting the Jackets 41-23. However, the Caps were 1 for 6 on the powerplay, Sergei Bobrovsky made 39 saves, and a VERY bad penalty in overtime lead to Nick Foligno 4 on 3 goal in overtime. With that the Caps winning streak is over but still have earned 7 out of 8 possible points in the last 4 games.

Caps/Jackets Highlights:

My Thoughts:

*The Caps played decent last night but the Jason Chimera penalty in overtime cost the Caps in my opinion. Chimera has been around long enough to know better. Barry Trotz may take him out Saturday after that.

*Evgeny Kuznetsov had an assist on the Eric Fehr powerplay goal. For Kuzzy it's a three game point streak. He also hit the post in the 3rd period on a nice shot, just didn't beat the post.

*Troy Brouwer had another strong game, he scored on a deflection for his second goal in as many games. The second line seems to be building chemistry.

*Jay Beagle blocked a shot in overtime while trying to kill off the penalty, however Beags would barely get off the ice so we will have to monitor his status for Saturday.

*Braden Holtby played well in my opinion, all the goals were tough. Maybe the second one he should have had but he has been making those saves on a consistent basis. He still only gave up two goals in 60 minutes which should lead to wins more times than not.

*The Caps had a 4 minute powerplay in the second period that they were unable to score on. Another reason for the loss 1-6 on the PP. The Caps had chances but Bobrovsky was on his game. On some of the powerplays there was not enough net presence. Both goals the Caps scored were on deflects which was the only way you were going to beat Bob last night.

*Matt Niskanen has been standing out to me lately, I think he is playing well and is comfortable with his new teammates now.

*Nate Schmidt got banged up a little bit but ended up being fine. Schmidt has been in my opinion the most consistent defensemen all season and has earned his spot on the blue line.

Pregame Notes: Washington Capitals vs. Columbus Blue Jackets

The Caps are back home for a quick two game home stand starting tonight against the Columbus Blue Jackets. The Caps are on a three game winning streak and will now look to extend it. Here's what the lineup should look like based on the morning skate.

Forwards:

Ovechkin-Backstrom-Wilson
Johansson-Kuznetsov-Brouwer
Laich-Fehr-Ward
Chimera-Latta-Beagle

Defense and Goalies:

Orpik-Carlson
Alzner-Niskanen
Schmidt-Green

Holtby
Peters

What to Watch:

*Mike Green just confirmed that he will be back in the lineup tonight. Green has been out since the Buffalo game on Nov. 22nd with a upper body injury.

*Congratulations to Karl Alzner and his wife Mandi on the birth of their first child. Stella Raay Alzner was born at 7:22 pm. According to twitter Alzner was singing Big Poppa in the locker room before the morning skate. Very nice Karl!

*Andre Burakovsky will be a healthy scratch yet again for the Caps tonight. The youngster has hit the rookie wall but with some practice time should benefit him. Hopefully when he gets back into the lineup he can get going.

*The Caps had their best effort of the season on Tuesday, hopefully they can continue to do that because this is a chance for the Caps to get a solid winning streak going.

*Matt Niskanen has played well on the powerplay and it will be interesting to see if Mike Green gets powerplay time right away tonight or will they ease him back in.

*Brooks Laich looks like he has his legs back, the Caps have done really well this season with Laich in the lineup. I would like to see if he can continue to have a big impact.

*Braden Holtby will be back in net once again tonight. Holtby has had a big work load this month with there not being a lot of back to backs this month. However, it seems the more work he gets the better he plays.

Postgame Recap: Caps 5 Lightning 3

The Caps played their best 60 minutes of the season to win their third game in a row. Alex Ovechkin's two goals would set the tone as the Caps forecheck was strong and they were able cycle the puck. It was in my opinion the best I have seen this team this year. Here are the highlights.

Caps/Lightning Highlights:

My Thoughts:

*Alex Ovechkin was great last night as he scored at the beginning and a again at the end of the game. However it was his work with Tom Wilson and Nick Backstrom that was impressive. That line had numerous shifts in the Lightning zone.

*Brooks Laich scored the game winner not long after Steven Stamkos tied it early in the 2nd period. Laich is heating up.

*Jay Beagle scored in the first two games of this 3 game road trip. Beags would not score last night but I believe he had another strong game, he had a breakaway but Ben Bishop's poke check ended the chance. None the less Jay Beagle is playing very well.

*Matt Niskanen scored on a powerplay and he is starting to look more comfortable with the Caps now.

*Braden Holtby had a solid game, the third goal came at a moment when the game was in hand. Holts made the saves he needed to make when the Lightning were making a push at the beginning of the 3rd period.

*Troy Brouwer called himself out the other day, and he responded with a big goal in the 3rd which would end up being huge. Not only that, the second line as a whole played well. Marcus Johansson and Evgeny Kuznetsov had assists on the Brouwer goal.

*Overall this was a fun game to watch, the Caps played very well and when the Lightning scored the Caps responded and kept playing with purpose. This 3 game road trip that produced 3 wins may be the beginning of the Caps turning the corner, Thursday's game will be big because then it will be the beginning of a solid winning streak.

Pregame Notes: Washington Capitals at. Tampa Bay Lightning

The Caps begin their week in Tampa to take on a very talented Lightning group. Here is what the lineup will be tonight as the Caps look to win their third game in a row.

Forwards:

Ovechkin-Backstrom-Wilson
Johansson-Kuznetsov-Brouwer
Laich-Fehr-Ward
Chimera-Latta-Beagle

Defense and Goalies:

Orpik-Carlson
Alzner-Niskanen
Schmidt-Hillen

Holtby
Peters

What to Watch:

*Andre Burakovsky will be a scratch for the second game in a row, Burakovsky was named to Team Sweden for the World Junior Championships but it is unknown if he will go play in that or stay in DC.

*Liam O'Brien was sent down to Hershey Sunday. O'Brien has been a great story and it's fair to him to go down so he can play and get better for when his next chance comes around.

*Looks like Mike Green will miss tonight's game, however Thursday at home against Columbus looks like a real possibility.

*Braden Holtby will be back in net tonight as he has been really good lately. The Lightning will have their mountain of a goalie Ben Bishop in between the pipes.

*Michael Latta's solid play has put him back in the lineup, along with Jay Beagle and Jason Chimera that line has been good.

*Evgeny Kuznetsov had a good game in New Jersey, we will see if he can heat up.

*This will be a tough game for the Caps but it is also a great opportunity for a signature win to start a win streak. The Caps have to play with energy from the beginning or they will be in trouble.

Note that the Bears had their annual Teddy Bear toss.

*Also Stan Galiev scored again and is on a roll, he may be playing his way back into the Caps plans if he continues lighting it up.

Postgame Recap: Caps 4 Devils 1

The Caps have a two game winning streak after a strong effort in New Jersey. The Caps got goals from Karl Alzner, Jay Beagle, Evgeny Kuznetsov and an empty net goal by Brooks Laich along with another strong game by Braden Holtby to end this week on a good note. Here are the highlights.

Caps/Devils Highlights:

My Thoughts:

*Caps had another strong defensive effort tonight and once again held the Devils to one goal. This time however they were able to give a little more goal support and were able to get the two points.

*Evgeny Kuznetsov had a strong game with a powerplay goal. This after being a healthy scratch on Thursday against the Carolina Hurricanes.

*Jay Beagle is playing very well of late after scoring in Carolina he made a great play to give the Caps the lead in the second period. Along with Jason Chimera and Michael Latta that 4th line was very good again for the Caps.

*Karl Alzner is not a scorer but he chipped in tonight with his first goal of the year, and Tom Wilson was able to pick up an assist on the goal.

*Nice to see Brooks Laich score the empty net goal, for Brooksy is was his 2nd of the season and 2nd goal of this week.

*Braden Holtby again was very good in between the pipes. He tried for an empty net goal himself but he was unable to put it in the net. Thats ok though as he was able to hold the Devils off.

*The Hershey Bears beat the Wilkes-Barre/Scranton Penguins tonight 2-1 with a strong effort from Pheonix Copley in net and two goals by Chris Conner. Check my previous post for highlights.

BEARS/PENS HIGHLIGHTS

Pregame Notes: Washington Capitals at. New Jersey Devils

The Caps are in New Jersey tonight to try to start a winning streak after taking down the Hurricanes on Thursday night. The Caps and Devils have split two pervious games at the Verizon Center.

Forwards:

Ovechkin-Backstrom-Wilson
Johansson-Kuznetsov-Brouwer
Laich-Fehr-Ward
Chimera-Latta-Beagle

Defense and Goalies:

Orpik-Carlson
Alzner-Niskanen
Schmidt-Hillen

Holtby
Peters

What to Watch:

*Evgeny Kuznetsov is back in the lineup after being a scratch on Thursday, Andre Burakovsky will be a healthy scratch as Trotz is going to rotate them till one breaks out.

*Braden Holtby will most likely be in net, Holtby has been good his last 10 starts.

*The Caps may not be facing Jaromir Jagr tonight as he has the FLU and may or may not be playing for the Devils tonight.

*Michael Latta will again center the 4th line after a solid game in Carolina on Thursday.

*The Caps defense played very well in Carolina, not they need to do it for a stretch of games. They lost to the Devils 1-0 last time they played, so goal support will also be needed.

*Jason Chimera had a good game the other night, he needs to continue to play well because his speed is an asset in the lineup.

*Mike Green will not play tonight, but is targeting Tuesday in Tampa for his return. The Caps are just taking it easy and making sure that he will be ready to go when he does come back into the lineup.

*The Hershey Bears opened their weekend with a 6-3 win over the Bridgeport Sound Tigers. The Bears got two goals from Stan Galiev who has a 4 game goal scoring streak and looks to be breaking out finally. Bears also got two goals from Chris Brown, as well has getting goals from Joel Broda and Chris Conner.

Hershey Bears open weekend with win over Bridgeport Sound Tigers

Hershey Bears 6 Sound Tigers 3

The Hershey Bears Weekend ahead

The Bears have a busy weekend ahead with 3 games in 3 nights. Tonight the Bears will host the Bridgeport Sound Tigers and will have a home and home with their rival Wilkes-Barre/Scranton, with the Saturday's game at Wilkes-Barre and Sunday at the Giant Center. Here is a preview of the weekend for the Bears.

Hershey Bears In the Den:

Postgame Recap: Caps 2 Hurricanes 1

The Caps started their 3 game road trip with a grind it out win against the Hurricanes. Thanks to a strong effort and solid defense the Caps were able to end their 2 game losing streak. Here are the highlights.

Caps/Canes Highlights:

My Thoughts:

*The Caps defense I said the other day needed to step up. Well they did against the Canes with only giving up one goal. As well as blocking shots and overall they were just better.

*Braden Holtby got back to his game as he had a solid effort too.

*For the second time this season I mentioned Jason Chimera needed to do more and he had a great effort that lead to Jay Beagle's goal early in the first period.

*Eric Fehr had great effort play and he was rewarded with the game winning goal. Fehr is another player who has had a tough season at times.

*Former Cap Alexander Semin got his 500th career point after scored the Hurricanes only goal. It was only Semin's first goal of the season, which for someone who has as much talent as he does he is really underachieving so far this season.

*It was clear to me that the Caps had a better effort overall last night then they have had the last two games. They were harder on the puck and like I mentioned the defensive effort was better.

*The top line may not have scored but there were a couple shifts where they just dominated the puck, the key is getting that effort on a more consistent basis so that they can pile up more wins.

Caps Lineup vs. Carolina

A little change from this morning in the lineup. Here it is:

Forwards:

Ovechkin-Backstrom-Wilson
Johansson-Burakvosky-Brouwer
Laich-Fehr-Ward
Chimera-Latta-Beagle

Defense and Goalies:

Orpik-Carlson
Alzner-Niskanen
Schmidt-Hillen

Holtby
Peters

*Evgeny Kuznetsov and Liam O'Brien are healthy scratches.

Pregame Notes: Washington Capitals at. Carolina Hurricanes

The Caps are in Carolina to start a 3 game road swing that kicks off tonight against the Hurricanes. The Caps will try to end their 2 game losing streak against a Hurricanes team that will be without goalie Cam Ward who has a lower body injury. These are the lines from the morning skate.

Forwards:

Ovechkin-Backstrom-Wilson
Johansson-Kuznetsov-Brouwer
Laich-Fehr-Ward
Chimera-Latta-Beagle

Defense and Goalies:

Orpik-Carlson
Alzner-Niskanen
Schmidt-Hillen

Holtby
Peters

What to Watch:

*From what I am reading it looks like Andre Burakovsky is going to be a scratch tonight. Burakovsky has hit a wall lately and just is having trouble with consistency. He has an upside but I believe he is just still developing. It might be a good choice to let him sit a game.

*Michael Latta is taking rushes with the 4th line so if Burakovsky does indeed sit then I expect Latta to slip in. The Caps can use his toughness in the lineup.

*No official word yet but I do believe that Braden Holtby will start again tonight. Without back to back games this week Holts should get a lot of work in.

*The Caps are 10-10-4 on the season which is average. However, the Canes are only 8-13-3 so this could be a good night for the Caps to get back in the win column. Maybe this road trip can be a turn around. It's a quarter of the way through the season and the highest the Caps can finish in the Metro is 3rd. But that's fine that's all they should focus on for now.

*Evgeny Kuznetsov appears to be staying on the 2nd line for now. I think he needs to play faster, he looks like he isn't moving his feet.

*Mike Green made the trip with the team but I don't believe we will see him this week, but I think next week there is a chance.

*I think another guy the Caps can use more from is Jason Chimera, I think he isn't playing the way he is capable of. If he gets his speed going and plays with energy he is a good bottom six forward.

*I expect Anton Khudobin to start in net for the Hurricanes tonight. The Canes always give the Caps a fight though the Caps have won 8 of their last 10 in Raleigh.

Highlights of Hershey Bears 1-0 win over St. John's on Nov. 30th

                                                     Hershey Bears 1 St. John's 0

Postgame Recap: Canucks 4 Caps 3

The Caps fell behind and tried to come back, however a Daniel Sedin powerplay goal in the third period would be too much for the Caps to overcome. With the loss the Caps are sitting at .500. Here are the highlights.

Caps/Canucks:

My Thoughts:

*John Carlson scored 2 goals and had an assist. For Carlson that would be his first multi-goal game in his NHL career.

*Brooks Laich scored his first goal of the season on a beautiful move to tie the game in the third.

*The Sedin twins were too much for the Caps tonight. Those two controlled the game when they were on the ice. I was at the game and it was impressive to watch them in person.

*The Caps PK was not impressive. The Canucks connected on 3 powerplays which at the end of the day would be the reason the Caps would loss yet again.

*Braden Holtby was a mixed bag, I felt like he played ok. The last goal he should have had in my opinion but he didn't play horrible but not great either.

*The Caps second line I think didn't do much. Johansson had one chance but other than that they over passed the puck.

*The defense as a whole needs to step their game up a notch.

*Overall I feel like team needs more energy. At times last night the team looked energetic, but they seemed like zombies in the first period. This team needs to find their way before it gets too late this season.

Pregame Notes: Washington Capitals vs. Vancouver Canucks

The Caps return home tonight to take on a much improved Vancouver Canuck team. The Caps will look to get back on track after taking one on the chin in Toronto on Saturday. Here's what the lineup will look like.

Forwards:

Ovechkin-Backstrom-Wilson
Johansson-Kuznetsov-Brouwer
Laich-Fehr-Ward
Chimera-Burakovsky-Beagle

Defense and Goalies:

Orpik-Carlson
Alzner-Niskanen
Hillen-Schmidt

Holtby
Peters

What to watch:

*Braden Holtby is in net tonight after playing the second period against Toronto. Holtby has played very well in the games he has started in in the last 3 weeks.

*Brooks Laich will be bumped up and will play with Eric Fehr and Joel Ward. That means Jason Chimera will will drop to the 4th line.

*Evgeny Kuznetsov played well last Friday agaist the Islanders, we will see if he can grow into the 2nd line center spot.

*Mike Green will probably still be out the rest of this week, however Jack Hillen has played pretty well in taking over for Green.

*The Caps need to start winning, every time this season when it seems like the Caps are starting to make progress they take another step back. Tonight is a big game because the Caps are 2 points behind the Rangers for 3rd in the Metro. Pittsburgh and NY Islanders are running away from the pack.

*Tom Wilson scored and had a nice fight on Saturday, Wilson is growing as a player. I personally love the fact that he plays with an edge. That is something the Caps need, and he will score more as his game develops even more.

*I expect the Canucks to go with Ryan Miller in net tonight. In my opinion Ryan Miller is the reason why the Canucks are back this year.

*Gametime 7 p.m on CSN
